Dear Gay Community: Please Get Some New Spokesmodels

May 15, 2012

Has it really come down to this?  Clay Aiken appearing last Sunday on Face the Nation as a real life gay man (not the Will & Grace fake gay man who fake did so much to advance fake gay rights) in support of gay marriage.

Isn’t that the same Clay Aiken who vehemently denied for years that he was, in fact, gay?  Who only came out after his career was in the crapper and he was caught showing off his American Idol on the internet?

Then Monday, Ricky Martin hosts a big NYC gay organization’s fundraiser for President Obama.  The same Ricky Martin who, at the height of his career, vehemently denied his homosexuality and actually paraded his “girlfriend” around to all his big events?

I won’t even mention Anderson Cooper.

These are not your role models.  These are opportunist famewhores who will exploit anything for more camera time.  Don’t believe me?  Clay Aiken is a finalist on next week’s finale of Celebrity Apprentice and Ricky Martin is appearing in Evita on Broadway.

  1. Did Anderson deny being gay? I really don’t know. Somebody clue me in.

In my opinion–more of an artful dodge than a denial.

    • I don’t think he ever explicitly denied it and, for that, I give him partial credit. But he has also said he was not going to talk about her personal private life yet talked and wrote at length about his brother’s suicide and has had his mother on his CNN newsreading hour and his daytime talk show. So…..I think he’s trying to have it both ways.

  2. When Ricky Martin is Evita on Broadway then I’ll take him seriously! Just joking, I agree there are so many more coragous people who should have held these honnors. This just feels like the Gay marriage march in NYC when Simon Van Kempen practicaly pooped his rainbow colored sequined pants becacuse he wanted to speak and Sonja woudn’t let him. Everyone one was like…..??? um aren’t you supposed to be straight and married to boot? Why is this your moment?

    • And why was Sonja speaking in the first place? There’s good publicity and bad publicity and I think, if you need to bring Housewives to your event, you should get a new publicist.

      • Sonja thinks that she is some Gay icon like Liza or Cher. She probably thinks that there are queens out in the startosphere right now stressing out cause they can’t find the perfect Sonja Morgan wig.

Yes AOM; it really has. I think the Reluctant Gays feel a need to embrace the really big statement events like a penace for turning their backs on some group or organizations that probably could have used their public support back in the days of the trench battles. So I agree it’s a bit ‘day late, dollar short’.

  4. Ellen DeGeneres risked her career and did come out when she had her own TV comedy show. Remember how she had to go back to doing less than stellar comedy clubs? She has promoted gay rights with dignity and grace and has probably done more for the GLAAD community than any one else. Elizabeth Taylor should also get a huge thank you from the gay community. When everyone else was shunning AIDS victims, she came out with guns a blazing.

IMO there is nothing sexier than a person comfortable in their own skin…..So If you are going to be a gay advocate then do that but please not in a half asses way. Give me a Tim Gunn rather than an angry about everything Rosie or the passive aggressive Clay Aiken. My confident gay friends know who they are and make everyone around them comfortable. I have other gay friends that are so self destructive and just don’t understand why life is so unfair. Know thyself pluuuseeze!

  6. AOM: Puttin’ out an APB on you!!! Where are you??? I’ve taken your gravatar and distributed to LEO’s across the US… next step will be Interpol and Scotland Yard!! Seriously… hope you are OK… give a shout when you can!! SH
